Blue Teapot Theatre Company’s Performing Arts School in the city is now accepting applications to enrol on its next course which begins in September.
This course is an opportunity for adults with an intellectual disability, aged 18 and over, to access formal arts training, leading to certification in QQI Awards Level 2 and 3. Blue Teapot is hosting an Open Day this Friday, January 17, at its base on Munster Avenue, running from 10.30am-4pm for anyone who is interested.
Its three-year arts programme focuses on performing arts modules such as drama, music, costume and design, and students can fulfil their artistic potential by participating in theatre showcases and short films. There is also a Life Skills and a Literacy and IT programme as part of the course.
Tutors include theatre directors, actors, musicians and designers, all of whom are experts in their subjects. They are also specialists in advocacy.
Designer Rosah Mangan is one of the tutors and she explains what’s involved in her aspect of the programme.
“In QQI Level 3 Craft students design and construct their own puppets. By the module’s end, students will have brought their puppets to life through manipulation and movement.”
Blue Teapot Theatre Company works to radically transform theatre practices by telling stories through the lens of disability, paving the way for inclusive practices to become the norm.
The atmosphere in its school is positive, safe and inclusive, with the aim of having a learning environment where everyone feels valued and respected, according to Judith Wolfe of the company, a view that’s echoed by student Caoimhe McMahon.
“Blue Teapot allows us to learn and perform new skills such as drama and stagecraft, and it has helped me to be more confident.”
The programme runs four days a week all year round. Places on the course are limited and the deadline for applications is January 31.
To visit during this Friday’s Open Day or to request an application form, people can email training@blueteapot.ie or contact 087 652 0146.
