Aran Island delegation travels to Brussels to discuss air service compliance with EU regulations

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A delegation from the Aran Islands travelled to Brussels this week to discuss the compliance of its government subsidised air service with EU regulations.

The group met with representatives from the European Commission to discuss a study recently commissioned by the Department of the Gaeltacht to ascertain whether the public service obligation route complies with European regulations.

The current contract was awarded last September and covers a period of one year.

The meeting was facilitated by North West MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher and was also attended by MEPs Jim Higgins and Marian Harkin and Galway Deputies Eamon O’Cuiv and Noel Grealish.

Galway West Fianna Fail TD Eamon O’Cuiv said the criteria for the study was clearly explained and indicates that European regulations do not pose any threat to the service.

He says future funding of the service is a matter for national government to decide.

Olympic Boxing Club welcomes Boxers from Ukraine for Tournament this afternoon

A team of boxers who are based in Ukraine are in Galway for a tournament that has been organised by the Olympic Boxing Club in Galway along with Smithfield Boxing Club from Dublin.

The boxers will face a select team made up of Olympic and Smithfield boxers and some invited guests and will get underway at 2.30pm following the opening ceremony at 2.

All the visiting boxers had to make their way from the war torn country and have been involved in a camp ahead of their tournaments today in Galway and next weekend in Dublin.

The tournament has been organised by John and Mike Mongan in Olympic and Igor Kamil from Smothfield, himself a Ukrainian national.

INMO warns of a catastrophic winter as UHG records third highest number on trolleys for month of September

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation are warning of a catastrophic winter ahead in our hospitals following figures released on Friday that recorded 10,515 patients on trolleys in the month of September.

This is the second worst September for overcrowding in Irish hospitals when 10,641 patients were without a bed in 2019.

University Hospital Galway recorded third highest number of patients with 1032 patients on Trolleys in September.

Only Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Limerick were higher with Limerick having the highest number in the country with 1,382.

The HSE is appealing to patients to consult a GP and consider all other options, before they attend an emergency department.

Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Francis Duffy to receive the Pallium from the Primate of All-Ireland this afternoon

The Pallium that Archbishop Duffy will recieve this afternoon.

In what is a historical first, the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Francis Duffy will receive the Pallium as part of a Investiture Mass that will take place in Tuam Cathedral at 3pm this afternoon.

The Pallium is a woollen liturgical vestment worn only worn by Archbishops, Cardinals and Popes and will symbolise the fact that he is the Metropolitan Bishop of Connacht.

Usually newly appointed Archbishops receive the Pallium from the Pope on the feast of Sts Peter and Paul. However, Pope Francis wants the ceremony to be at a diocesan and metropolitan celebration, so Archbishop Duffy will formally receive the Pallium from the Primate of All Ireland Eamon Martin.

Present at the mass will be the bishops of the Connacht province, the priests and religious of Tuam Archdiocese and representatives from the 56 parishes of the Archdiocese.
