A new survey shows almost 28 per-cent of discarded empty packets across the country are illegal and untaxed.

Galway is ranked 6th in 22 cities and towns surveyed across the country and is 3 percent above the national average for illicit cigarettes.

The research shows smokers in Drogheda in Co Louth and Tallaght in Dublin are the biggest users of illegal cigarettes followed by Athlone in Westmeath while the lowest is Clonmel in County Tipperary.
