Online shoppers in Galway have been warned to be aware of a website purporting to be that of a long-established Galway company
Offering men’s and women’s clothing and footwear, as well as handbags, it claims to be a business celebrating ten years in the heart of Galway … but there is no such outlet in the city.
The website maeveandorla.com, with AI-generated images, appears to be based in Asia — and is the subject of scathing reviews by disgruntled customers complaining of shoddy goods and service.
There is no such business in Galway, even though the website shows a photo of Maeve and Orla, the ‘owners’ of the business, with a message, ‘10 Wonderful Years in the Heart of Galway’, announcing their special anniversary sale.
But there is another remarkably similar website, offering the same goods in a special anniversary sale, whose business has been ‘10 Wonderful Years in the Heart of Kerry’.
This site also carries a photo of its ‘owners’, Ruby and Maeve — the same duo named as Maeve and Orla on the so-called Galway business’s website.
The Galway site appears to be newer to the scene than the Kerry one (its first Facebook post was in July), but both are the subject of warnings from reviewers on social media.
An online search shows the intrepid pair have also had a wonderful ten years in New York (as Mason and Rose) and Toronto (Lily and Clara) and there are possibly many more locations.
The suspect retailers promote and sell their goods through their own websites, on Facebook, Instagram and elsewhere.
Multiple reviews online report problems with the poor quality of goods, difficulty in securing refunds for returns and shoddy customer service, from the websites.
One reviewer of the ‘Galway’ website said: “Another fake site from the same group, Ruby and Maeve is another one, uses the same pictures same story of a ’10 year anniversary sale’ get the stuff in from China then will not refund you. Also offer you money back in dollars but they claim to have their shops in either Kerry or Galway, they don’t exist!! BEWARE.”
Another warned: “Site purporting to be Irish using fake AI imagery. Shipping from a location in China. Avoid.”
