A 25-year-old man who admits carrying out a knife attack in Galway City earlier this year has a previous conviction for assault, a court has heard.

Ronan Asgari, of no fixed abode, Galway, appeared at Galway Circuit Court to confirm guilty pleas to charges arising from an incident at Moneenageisha Road on August 23.

He pleaded guilty that while committing assault, he produced a knife capable of inflicting serious injury, contrary to section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

He also admits assaulting a man and causing him harm, contrary to section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against The Person Act, as amended by the Criminal Justice Miscellaneous Provisions Act.

The case was previously described by a Garda sergeant in the District Court as a “very serious matter”.

When asked if he wished to confirm his signed guilty pleas, Asgari replied “yeah”.

Defence barrister, Brendan Browne BL, told the court he had been instructed to seek a report from the probation and welfare services and request a prison Governor’s report.

Counsel said his client was in the care of a psychologist and the court should have sight of a report prior to sentencing.

The court heard Asgari has a previous conviction for assault causing harm.

Judge Brian O’Callaghan adjourned sentencing to July 27, 2026.
