1400 people in Galway come off the PUP payment this week

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Just over 14 hundred people in Galway have come off the Pandemic Unemployment Payment in the past week, with just under 6 thousand people making the claim

Nationally, more than 25 and a half thousand people have come off the PUP in the past week.

This week’s decrease represents a significant reduction, compared to a fall of just 3 thousand nationally the previous week.

It coincides with a drop in the top tier of the payment by 50 euro to 300 euro.

The majority of people who signed off the payment returned to work in the hospitality sector.

Minister Ryan appoints Galway businessman Padraig O’Ceidigh chairperson of Shannon Group

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway businessman Padraig O’Ceidigh has been appointed Chairperson designate of the Shannon Group.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan announced the move today, saying Mr O’Ceidigh will bring extensive experience and sectoral knowledge to the role.

He has held senior management positions including Executive Officer and Chairman of Aer Arann for some 26 years, and served as a Senator

Commenting on his appointment, Mr O’Ceidigh said Shannon Airport is a vital economic engine for the Shannon Region and wider west of Ireland economy.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Funding has been approved for extra classrooms at Lackagh National School

Minister for Education Norma Foley has confirmed that funding will be provided for the additional accommodation

It includes two new mainstream classrooms and a special education teacher room to cater for the current demand within the recently built school.

Slight fall in numbers claiming PUP in Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Just over 106,000 people will receive the Pandemic Unemployment Payment this week.

That’s a drop of over 4,500 on last week.

The greatest reduction was in the Accommodation and Food Services sector.

In Galway, the drop in number is very small this week – it’s gone down 260

This means 5,440 people are still on the PUP in Galway

Commenting on the national figures Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys say today’s figures show the number claiming payments has now fallen for 33 consecutive weeks.

Since February, the number of young people, under the age of 25, who were claiming the PUP is down by over 90 per cent.
