Portumna 3-21
Mullagh 2-16
By Darren Kelly at Duggan Park
PORTUMNA recovered from a 12-point deficit and losing Andy Smith to a straight red card to produce a stunning senior hurling championship turnaround on Saturday, booking their place in the knock-out stages and closing in on promotion.
Second half goals from Jack Canning, Ronan O’Meara and Martin Tuohy allowed Jimmy Heverin’s team seize a fourth consecutive win after Mullagh enjoyed a 2-10 to 0-4 head start thanks to Ronan and Davy Glennon.
Mullagh began brightly as Shane Connaughton and Ronan Glennon put them two in front. Portumna struggled to find their rhythm but equalised by six minutes through O’Meara and Joe Canning from distance.
Padraig Kennedy restored Mullagh’s lead and Ronan Glennon added a free. And the latter ensured this was going to be a contest to remember when he took Damien Monaghan’s pass for Mullagh’s first goal on 10 minutes.
Monaghan got off the mark straight after making it 1-5 to 0-2. Portumna tried to gain a foothold as Tuohy received Joe Canning’s pass for his first score. And the Galway legend added his second point on 13 minutes.
However, fortune favoured Mullagh 60 seconds later when Davy Glennon dropped a long ball towards the square. All players, including keeper Kyle Heverin, missed the sliotar as it bounced into the net and Mullagh were 2-5 to 0-4 clear.
