Youth unemployment in the city is among the lowest rates in the country according to a report by the National Economic and Social Council.
The report, published today, reveals that there is a high level of regional disparity in youth unemployment.
Cities have lost out to suburbs in terms of population growth, however Galway experienced a modest jump in population.
The report finds that Galway, along with Dublin, Cork and Waterford have been less affected overall by the recession than other areas of the country.
Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of Irish households are now jobless according to the NESC report.
In 38 per cent of Irish households – expenditure now exceeds disposable income, while a quarter are in arrears with bill payments.
