Celebrated UK theatre company Kneehigh will bring their critically acclaimed show Tristan & Yseult to the Galway International Arts Festival in July.

Award-winning director and the artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe in London, Emma Rice, and writers Carl Grose and Anna Maria Murphy have reinvented this ancient legend of a love triangle between the warrior Tristan, his uncle King Mark of Cornwall and the beautiful Yseult.

The Cornish theme is particularly apt, as Kneehigh is based in Cornwall, where it has been creating theatre for audiences locally, nationally and internationally for more than 30 years.

Emma Rice is now Artistic Director of the Globe Theatre, having moved to there from Kneehigh.

Describing her as “visionary”, the Arts Festival’s Director Paul Fahy explains that “she elevated Kneehigh to the point where they are now loved and celebrated across the globe. Tristan & Yseult has played to sold-out houses on both sides of the Atlantic with this production, which is truly breathtaking and visually stunning”.

■ Tristan & Yseult will run at the City’s Town Hall Theatre from Tuesday, July 18, to Saturday, July 22 2017. Tickets, priced from €22 – €29.50, will go on sale next Tuesday, March 21, from Galway International Arts Festival (www.giaf.ie) and the Town Hall Theatre (www.tht.ie).
