Surprise over lack of heroin seized in Galway

Gardai say that the lack of heroin seized across the county so far this year is ‘most surprising’.
That was the opinion of Superintendent Tom Curley at this week’s meeting of the County Joint Policing Committee.
He told those in attendance that despite a presence of the drug in areas including Ballinasloe and Tuam, none of the class A substance has been seized by Gardai.
The county figures exclude Galway City, which recorded heroin seizures worth over €11,000 during the first three months of this year.
Recently, Gardai revealed that there are over 500 heroin users across Galway – of which 100 are addicts who use the drug on a daily basis.
Despite the lack of heroin seized, since January county Gardai have seized €113,000 worth of cannabis, almost €9,000 worth of cocaine, 8 thousand euro worth of ecstasy and over €2,500 worth of other illegal substances.
However, Superintendent Tom Curley says that there’s also been a notable and welcome drop in crimes in the county typically associated with higher levels of heroin use – particularly burglary, which has dropped by almost 50% so far this year.
