There’s been a sharp drop in thefts and burglaries across the county.
This week’s meeting of the County Joint Policing Committee heard that burglary in particular has significantly decreased since last year.
Meanwhile, almost €100,000 worth of illegal drugs have been seized across the county so far this year – the vast majority of it cannabis.
Attendees at this week’s meeting of the JPC heard that the burglary rate across the county has dropped by almost 40 percent since January.
There’s also been a notable drop in thefts – thefts from vehicles are down 67 percent over the past six months, while thefts from shops are down almost 10 percent.
The JPC revealed that €120,000 worth of illegal drugs have been seized by Gardai across the county so far this year – and cannabis accounts for almost 90% of that figure.
Also seized since January is almost €9,000 worth of cocaine, over €8,000 worth of ecstasy and €2,500 worth of unspecified drugs.
Despite an assertion from Chief Superintendent Tom Curley in April that there are 500 heroin users across the city and county, none of the drug has been seized by county Gardai so far this year.
Almost €14,000 worth of heroin has been seized in the city.
Gardai have also investigated ten alleged rapes across Galway over the past six months – that’s a significant 40 percent decrease on the figure for 2015.
Meanwhile, Gardai have also dealt with 23 non-aggravated sexual assaults across the county since January.
