Fresh from their latest tour of the USA, the band of virtuosos that are We Banjo 3 come to The Black Box on Friday, May 26.

It’s been an action-packed year so far for their violinist Fergal Scahill. On January 1, he put up a tune on YouTube and has done so every day since. Each day, he plays a piece that he’s learned during his career – so that’ll be 365 pieces of music he’ll have posted on YouTube by the end of 2017.

That’s quite a task to set yourself, but good luck to Fergal – it’s a great idea.

In March 2016, the Galway outfit made a trip to Washington DC to play for President Barack Obama and thanks to their talent and skilful marketing, they’ve been busy ever since. There are four musicians in the band now – originally it was three. They are brothers Enda Scahill (tenor banjo, vocals) and Fergal, plus brothers Martin Howley (tenor banjo, mandolin, vocals) and David Howley (lead vocals, guitar).

They’ve released four albums with their most recent being last year’s String Theory, which was marked by a show at the 2016 Arts Festival. Their latest Galway gig is as part of a nationwide tour which also sees them visit Dublin, Wexford, Offaly, Cork, Sligo, LImerick and Kilkenny. A band that are always worth seeing, they promise some special guests for their Black Box show.
