There’s relief for over 8,600 households in Loughrea, Craughwell and the surrounding region as the area’s long-standing boil water notice is lifted.
Irish Water has this evening confirmed that following stringent testing, the HSE and EPA are now satisfied that the water is safe for consumption.
The notice was imposed in February amid fears of Cryptosporidium.
Upgrade works have since been carried out on the Loughrea water supply and the system was flushed in recent weeks.
The upgrade included the installation of UV units at the Knockanima and Lake Road treatment plants and the upgrade of filtration systems.
A long term solution to water quality issues in Loughrea is currently in the planning stages and will involve the construction of a new pipeline to bring water to the area from Tuam – however, this project will not be delivered for several years.
Loughrea area councillor Michael Moegie Maher says the lifting of the notice is a huge relief for those who were affected.
