Re-opening of N59 near Clifden delayed

The mud-covered N59

The re-opening of the N59 at Lettershea today following a major landslide last week has been delayed until late tomorrow (28/06).
A series of landslides began last Thursday evening around 5 miles east of Clifden town, and thousands of tonnes of landslide material covered the road.
Galway County Council had hoped to reopen the road this evening but in a statement issued in the last few minutes said it will remain closed for another 24 hours
The council says works have taken place which have stalled the landslide.
However, work is ongoing on rebuilding roadside ditches and an intensive clean up is taking place.
The re-opening of the road is dependent on the progress of this work and is weather dependent.
In the meantime, diversions remain in place via the R344 for those travelling to/from Clifden and via the R341 for those travelling to/from Roundstone.
