A public meeting to discuss the controversial former green area at Kinvara Pier will take place in the village this evening.
The event is organised by the ‘Kinvara Save our Green’ campaign to seek clarity on future plans for the area once sewerage works are completed.
The green area was removed on a temporary basis in May to allow works to be carried out as part of the long-awaited Kinvara Sewerage Scheme.
However, residents are raising serious concerns over the growing use of the former green site as a carpark for tourist coaches in recent weeks.
Galway County Council has previously stated that it is a requirement under the contract that the green be re-instated – and there are no plans to convert the area into a permanent car park.
A petition started last month calling on the local authority to put an end to the site as an ‘unofficial and ugly’ carpark has gathered almost 700 signatures.
The public meeting will take place at St. Josephs National School this evening at 8pm.
Alan Bermingham of the ‘Save Our Green’ campaign says the removal of the green space has destroyed the visual appeal of the pier area.
