The Health and Safety Authority (HAS) has not yet finalised its investigation into the death of a three year old boy who became trapped in a lift in Galway city centre in January.
A spokesman for the HSA told the Galway City Tribune yesterday that the investigation was “still on-going” regarding the death of little Solomon Soremekun on January 13 last.
He said it was not known at this stage how many more weeks it would take before the investigation has concluded.
Solomon, whose family lived in the Doughiska area, died from injuries he sustained in the lift shaft at the office of the Department of Social Protection in the Hynes Building on St Augustine Street.
Reports at the time indicated that the little boy got out of his pushchair and went through open lift doors into the shaft. He was then crushed when the lift came down on top of him at about 3.15pm.
Gardai treated the death of the toddler, whose parents are Nigerian, as a tragic accident.
The HSA spokesman said the findings of the investigation would not be made public, but a file would be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“In all fatal accident cases such as this one, it would be normal for files to be sent to the DPP,” said the spokesman.
