Plans have been lodged to demolish the Corrib Great Southern Hotel in the city.Owner Gerry Barrett is hoping to demolish the landmark hotel and allow GMIT to use it as a temporary car park until he decides on the long-term future use of the site. MD Merlin Developments Ltd, headed up by Managing Director Gerry Barrett and Director Catherine Barrett, has lodged plans with Galway City council seeking permission to demolish the Corrib Great Southern on the Dublin Road. Gerry Barrett is currently reviewing the feasibility of a number of development proposals for the site but given the concentration of hotels within the city, says a hotel is no longer a 'viable commercial concern'. Gerry Barrett bought the hotel in 2006 and it ceased trading in September 2007. It's currently vacant and most of the interior fittings and furniture have been removed from the building.
