Minister reviews defence forces unit ahead of UN mission

The 54th Infantry Group has been recognised for its commitment to peace and security at a special ministerial review in the city this afternoon.
It comes as the 130 person unit, based at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa in Renmore, is preparing to deploy to the Golan Heights for a six-month mission later this month.
The body of troops was inspected by the Minister with Special Responsibility for the Defence Forces Paul Kehoe at a special assembly at Galway Cathedral.
Minister Kehoe said Ireland is held in high regard due to the troops who work on such overseas missions.
He wished Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Mary Carroll well in leading the mission and vowed that the government will introduce further initiatives to increase female participation in the defence forces at all ranks.
