Galway Bay fm newsroom – Works on lowering Lough Atalia road under the railway bridge have been deferred.
The work was due to start next week and last a period of 8 weeks, but a pollution concern has halted plans.
The plans include the lowering of Lough Atalia road and footways running under the bridge to make it safer.
It also involves realigning the road and upgrading the existing layout at a total cost of 1.6 million euro.
The bridge has been the location of several collisions in recent years.
However, during groundwork investigations a pollution concern was raised relating to hydrocarbon contamination, which is diesel contamination.
It was established that an extra half a million euro would now be needed to remediate the area from contamination.
It’s understood the Chief Executive of the City Council does not want to proceed with the project as the Council does not have the extra 500 thousand euro needed.
Negotiations are ongoing with the Department of Transport to try and secure the necessary funds and the issue is due to be discussed at a Council meeting next Monday.
