Irish Water says the upgrade of piping in Ballinasloe would be ‘impossible’ without some degree of inconvenience for local people.
However, the company says it’ll work closely with the stakeholders affected by the works to minimise the extent of the disruption.
Concerns were raised that the works, which are due to be completed by August 2016, would have a negative impact on local businesses.
In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, Irish Water says works on the first of two contracts will begin shortly.
The 18 month contract to improve Ballinasloe’s sewers and watermains will also include watermain laying in Oranmore, Athenry and Headford.
As a result, the company says contractors will not be on site in Ballinasloe for the entire duration of the contract.
The second contarct is due to go to tender later this year, and includes additional sewers, watermains and street enhancement works.
Irish Water says it would be ‘impossible’ to undertake infrastructural improvement works without some degree of inconvenience for locals.
However, it says it’ll work closely with the various stakeholders affected to minimise the extent of the disruption.
