Council agrees to invite Springsteen to perform at Galway airport

The city council has agreed a motion to contact Aiken Promotions to invite Bruce Springsteen to perform at Galway Airport in May
The motion was put forward at last night’s meeting by Cllr Pearce Flannery, who says the city and county council owned site in Carnmore is a perfect concert venue
CEO Brendan McGrath urged caution about the idea saying Croke Park’s planning permission covers holding big events while Galway Airport’s doesn’t
He also stressed there’s a mandatory 13 week licence application process which has now been missed for Bruce Springsteen’s May visit to Dublin
However Cllr Flannery told Bernadette Prendergast after the meeting that he despairs of things being ruled out before they are explored
Meanwhile, the CEO confirmed to the meeting that the original operator of the aviation licence for Carnmore has applied for the licence to be renewed
Mr McGrath told members the application made in the last few days is being assesed
No firm decisions on the future use of the site have yet been made although a feasability study recommended it be used as an arts, culture and film hub
