Customers will no longer be able to withdraw or lodge money over the counter at Galway's Bank of Ireland, Mainguard Street under radical changes to digitise almost all transactions at one of the busiest banks in the city.

Any face to face contact with a bank teller will now have to done upstairs once its “new digital branch for Mainguard Street” is complete on the ground floor.

The digital branch involves “a new open-front design, innovative interior and featuring a digital wall and zones that will allow customers to interact with the full range of Bank of Ireland services”

Upstairs it will be “business-as-usual delivered by all the familiar staff faces”, according to a statement from the Bank of Ireland head office issued following queries by the Galway City Tribune.

However, business as usual does not involve the lodging or withdrawing of cash, with customers forced to go to Eyre Square, Salthill, Mervue, Oranmore and NUIG to carry out these transactions.
