Call to explore guidelines for disposal of city council owned land

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A strategic policy committee is to discuss guidelines for the disposal of city council owned land.
The matter has been raised at city council level.
It’s after a city resident received approval to extend their home – subject to purchasing a piece of public land.
Labour councillor Billy Cameron queried the section 183 process as a whole and whether a planning application can be made prior to instigating the process.
He also raised concerns over the need for policy or guidelines which indicate that there is a housing need in any such cases.
Director of Services Joe O’Neill said applicants do not have to be the owner of such land to make a planning application but must have the consent of the landowner.
He added there won’t be policy to suit every circumstance but discussion is important.
Fianna Fail councillor Michael Crowe said every such Section 183 case has its own merits and should be treated as such.
A discussion surrounding possible guidelines for the Section 183 process was referred to the strategic policy committee for further exploration.
