C-diff outbreak at Portiuncula Hospital contained

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Visiting restrictions which were put in place at Portiuncula Hospital due to a small outbreak of a potentially fatal infection have now been scaled back.
The restrictions were imposed last Friday after a number of patients were found to have contracted Clostridium difficile – or ‘C-Diff.’
The Saolta West Northwest Hospitals Group says there were a small number of cases of the infection, which can range from mild diarrhoea to potentially fatal colitis.
Affected patients were isolated, and precautions and infection control measures were put in place, including visitor restrictions.
The hospital group says the restrictions on visitors have now been reduced, and only applies to affected patients.
The HSE says infection control measures remain in place at the hospital, and the situation continues to be monitored daily by the hospital’s Infection Control team.
